Software Engineer (Marketing)

We're seeking a technologist with passion for data, analytics, and good old fashioned tinkering to join Scalyr's marketing team and help us both learn about our users, spread the word about Scalyr, and build a modern marketing automation stack.

First, a bit of background...

We’re a VC-funded startup, founded in 2011 by former Google engineers with a deep background in technical operations. Our founder Steve Newman (one of the creators of Google Docs) was frustrated by the sheer number of tools required to get his job done managing infrastructure at Google (17 different tools at one point!). Scalyr was created to solve that problem.

Over the past few years, our small team has developed a powerful tool for DevOps teams. It’s lightning-fast, feature-rich, and our customers - primarily engineers - love it (and pay for it.) We’ve been growing at a rapid clip, and we need more talented engineers to support that growth.

Your role & goal

You'll be on our marketing team and working directly with our head of marketing.  Cutting edge marketing departments (including ours) use quite a few toys. The best design and build some of their own.  Your role will be to help us build (and play with) these toys.  It's an important role with lots of autonomy and plenty of fun.

You'll work on our Node.js-based marketing site (www.scalyr.com) -- there's a redesign planned, and you'll work closely with our in-house designer to implement the new site.  You'll build the HTML templates (we use Jade - er, Pug) and style them with pixel-perfect CSS (we use LESS).  You'll also work on the Node app that powers the site and expand its functionality, integrating our blog and community sites.  Once the new site is built, you'll continue to maintain and develop new features.

You'll also work on our marketing automation stack:  We use Segment at the data layer and fire tons of events from users (both on our marketing site and within the product itself).  Those events are piped upstream to a data warehouse, our CRM system, our marketing automation system, and our analytics providers.  You'll develop and expand this platform - adding deeper automation and analysis.

You'll also help with a variety of other marketing-engineering tasks - building email templates, running A/B tests, testing landing pages, etc.

And, of course, you'll have the chance to interact with a strong engineering team and grow as an engineer.  It's an interesting, visible role with lots of potential.

You should

  • Have experience working with marketing automation tools;
  • Have experience with modern web stacks (JavaScript, Node.js/Express, HTML5, CSS3);
  • Be knowledgeable about current web engineering practices, tools, and languages, including build tools and preprocessors;
  • Have a fundamental appreciation for good design and be comfortable working closely with design and marketing leads;
  • Have working knowledge of version control (git) and linux/unix commands;

Some Nice-to-Haves (but not required)

  • Web design experience
  • Knowledge of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, etc.);
  • Open source contributions or personal projects (send us a link to your GitHub!); and
  • Knowledge of AWS or other cloud computing environments

Your teammates

You'll be working most directly with our marketing team.  You'll be the sole engineer dedicated to marketing, and you'll report to Rourke McNamara (head of marketing).  You'll also work with Kathleen Estreich (director of marketing) and Anthony Zambataro (marketing design lead).

We’re a small, close-knit group. We’re highly technical and cerebral. We listen to each other, value both affirming and dissenting opinions, have healthy debates (with no bruised egos), and love talking about our product, engineering, and everything else (from world politics to TV to science fiction novels.) We range in age from 20s to 50s.

More about the gig

  • Full-time, on-site at our office in San Mateo, CA;
  • Competitive salary & equity;
  • Generous benefits including comprehensive healthcare, free lunch, ability to work from home multiple days per week, unlimited vacations, and a very easygoing, low-stress, supportive and fun office environment.
