Software Engineer (Frontend)

We're seeking a software engineer with passion for building smooth, intuitive, powerful user interfaces to join Scalyr's core team and help build our next-generation DevOps tool.

First, a bit of background...

We’re a VC-funded startup, founded in 2011 by former Google engineers with a deep background in technical operations. Our founder Steve Newman (one of the creators of Google Docs) was frustrated by the sheer number of tools required to get his job done managing infrastructure at Google (17 different tools at one point!). Scalyr was created to solve that problem.

Over the past few years, our small team has developed a powerful tool for DevOps teams. It’s lightning-fast, feature-rich, and our customers - primarily engineers - love it (and pay for it.) We’ve been growing at a rapid clip, and we need more talented engineers to support that growth.

Your role & goal

You'll be on our core engineering team and working directly with our engineering, user experience, and product leads. We're rebuilding major parts of our application to improve usability, functionality, and appearance, so there are lots of opportunities to have a big impact.

In addition to writing code, you'll be deeply involved in design discussions, technology decisions, and all other aspects of bringing our UI to life.

Performance is important to us (and one of our key differentiators), so we spend a lot of time optimizing the JavaScript layer. If this sort of work gets you excited, you'll be perfect for this role.

You should

  • Have at least 2 years of professional experience with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS;
  • Have a fundamental appreciation for good design and be comfortable working closely with design and product leads;
  • Be knowledgeable about current front-end engineering practices, tools, and languages;
  • Have awareness of (but not a fanatical devotion to) current and emerging front-end development trends;
  • Have a solid understanding of a modern front-end framework such as Angular or React;
  • Have a 4-year degree in computer science (or equivalent experience);
  • Have strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, etc.);
  • Have working knowledge of linux/unix commands;

Some Nice-to-Haves

  • Academic or professional exposure to Java (what our backend is built with);
  • Experience with any/all of the following: LESS, Sass, CoffeeScript, TypeScript, ES6, Gulp;
  • Experience with other languages (Python, C/C++, Swift, Objective-C);
  • Open source contributions (send us a link to your GitHub!); and
  • Knowledge of AWS or other cloud computing environments

Your teammates

You'll be working with our entire engineering team. You'll work most closely with Asma Patel (who works on the front-end), but also with Chris Council (who works on both front-end and back-end/infrastructure), Steve Czerwinski (our lead engineer), Steve Newman (our CEO and lead architect), Claudia Carpenter (our UX lead), and Noah Lehmann-Haupt (our product lead).

We’re a small, close-knit group. We’re highly technical and cerebral. We listen to each other, value both affirming and dissenting opinions, have healthy debates (with no bruised egos), and love talking about our product, engineering, and everything else (from world politics to TV to science fiction novels.) We range in age from 20s to 50s.

More about the gig

  • Full-time, on-site at our office in San Mateo;
  • Competitive salary & equity;
  • Generous benefits including comprehensive healthcare, free lunch, ability to work from home multiple days per week, unlimited vacations, and a very easygoing, low-stress, supportive and fun office environment.
