Marketing Manager

We're seeking an experienced marketing generalist to help us tell the world about Scalyr.

First, a bit of background...

We’re a VC-funded startup, founded in 2011 by former Google engineers with a deep background in technical operations. Our founder Steve Newman (one of the creators of Google Docs) was frustrated by the sheer number of tools required to get his job done managing infrastructure at Google (17 different tools at one point!). Scalyr was created to solve that problem.

Over the past few years, our small team has developed a powerful tool for DevOps teams. It’s lightning-fast, feature-rich, and our customers - primarily engineers - love it (and pay for it.) We’ve been growing at a rapid clip, but we're ready to expand our marketing reach, and we need someone to help support that expansion.

Your role & goal

This is an execution-focused role (as opposed to a managerial one) and the focus will be on putting your operations, SEO, email, marketing automation, and paid advertising skills to work. You will be building and managing campaigns across channels and analyzing the results, ultimately helping us increase the number of leads we bring in through online and other marketing tactics.

This is a unique opportunity to join a small-but-fast-growing company and make a meaningful contribution. There’s only 15 of us here right now, we’re well-funded, and you’ll be working directly with the leadership team.

Areas of Responsibility

  • SEO - on-page optimization, link-building, keyword analysis;
  • Paid Ads - AdWords/Display, Facebook, Twitter, etc. campaign- and audience-building and deployment;
  • Email - drip campaigns and newsletters;
  • Marketing Automation - help us with all areas of marketing autoamtion, from lead scoring to attribution of pipeline and revenue
  • Metrics & Optimization - A/B testing, analyzing and monitoring campaign results, building and refining dashboards;
  • Content Distribution - promotion and distribution of our blog posts, whitepapers, etc.;
  • And...What have we left out? You tell us!

You should

  • Have hands-on marketing experience at a SaaS company. The raw # of years is less important than what you accomplished. You should have demonstrated success at a similarly-sized growth stage company ($1M+ ARR)
  • Have direct experience building and managing digital marketing campaigns and the associated skills that go with that: Defining audiences, evaluating channels, measuring results (and more).
  • Have knowledge about the universe of tools: We use Segment, Hubspot, Google Analytics, Heap, and a bunch of other great tools. What are we missing?
  • Be able to work closely with designers to oversee content creation (or, better yet, be able to do some of that yourself); and
  • Work independently and confidently, set your own goals, and stick to them.

Your teammates

You'll be working directly with and reporting to Rourke McNamara (our head of marketing), but you'll also be involved in broader strategic and tactical discussions with the rest of our leadership team (Casey Clark - head of sales, Noah Lehmann-Haupt - head of product, and Steve Newman - CEO) as well as working closely with Kimbre Lancaster (who oversees marketing ops and events).

We’re a small, close-knit group. We’re highly technical and cerebral. We listen to each other, value both affirming and dissenting opinions, have healthy debates (with no bruised egos), and love talking about our product, engineering, and everything else (from world politics to TV to science fiction novels.) We range in age from 20s to 50s.

More about the gig

  • Full-time, on-site at our office in San Mateo
  • Competitive salary & equity;
  • Generous benefits including comprehensive healthcare, free lunch, ability to work from home multiple days per week, unlimited vacations, and a very easygoing, low-stress, supportive and fun office environment.

A bit more about us

Scalyr is backed by top-tier VCs (Google Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Susa Ventures, Sherpalo Ventures.) We have plenty of cash, and *gasp* paying customers and a healthy business model.

We're a team of seasoned software professionals, hailing from places like Google, Stanford, and MIT. Many of us have founded or co-founded startups and we're all nerds at heart.

We're a highly engineering-focused company -- we build a tool for engineers made by engineers. And we're just beginning to go through the explosive-growth phase (5x revenue growth over the last year and we're signing 7-figure customer contracts). This is a great time to be a part of the early team.
