We're seeking a software engineer to work on our home-built NoSQL backend that queries up to 750 GB/second -- and help us take this to multiple TB/second.
We’re a VC-funded startup, founded in 2011 by former Google engineers with a deep background in technical operations. Our founder Steve Newman (one of the creators of Google Docs) was frustrated by the sheer number of tools required to get his job done managing infrastructure at Google (17 different tools at one point!). Scalyr was created to solve that problem.
Over the past few years, our small team has developed a powerful tool for DevOps teams. It’s lightning-fast, feature-rich, and our customers - primarily engineers - love it (and pay for it.) We’ve been growing at a rapid clip, and we need more talented engineers to support that growth.
You'll be on our core engineering team and working directly with the heart of our product, our Java-based backend (don't worry - we're not an 'enterprise Java' bloatware shop!) We're working through a major architectural improvement that's going to reduce storage costs, improve performance, and have a major impact on all aspects of the business, and you'll be at the center of that effort. Of course you'll also work on other aspects of the backend's continual improvement - feature additions, bug fixes, and the like. Needless to say, this role will have a big impact.
In addition to writing code, you'll be deeply involved in design discussions, technology decisions, and all other aspects of the engine that powers Scalyr.
You'll be working with our entire team, but most directly with our core backend engineers - Steve Newman (our CEO and lead architect), Steve Czerwinski (our lead engineer), John Hart (our senior backend engineer), and Chris Council (who works on both front-end and back-end/infrastructure).
We’re a small, close-knit group. We’re highly technical and cerebral. We listen to each other, value both affirming and dissenting opinions, have healthy debates (with no bruised egos), and love talking about our product, engineering, and everything else (from world politics to TV to science fiction novels.) We range in age from 20s to 50s.
Scalyr is backed by top-tier VCs (Google Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Susa Ventures, Sherpalo Ventures.) We have plenty of cash, and *gasp* paying customers and a healthy business model.
We're a team of seasoned software professionals, hailing from places like Google, Stanford, and MIT. Many of us have founded or co-founded startups and we're all nerds at heart.
There aren't any long meetings here - we're allergic to unnecessary overhead. We use a lightweight agile process with weekly releases and daily standups. We're always analyzing the effectiveness of the tools and processes we use, and we're careful about adopting new ones.
We're a highly engineering-focused company -- we build a tool for engineers made by engineers. And we're just beginning to go through the explosive-growth phase (5x revenue growth over the last year and we're signing 7-figure customer contracts). This is a great time to be a part of the early team.
